Downey Chess Club
It’s back! The Downey City Library invites you to join the Downey Chess Club this month to learn how to play chess. In addition to being a fun game, chess teaches students to become leaders by improving concentration, good sportsmanship, critical & abstract thinking, problem solving, planning, and analysis. Master strategic thinking through the Martial Arts of the Mind!

Happy Little Paint-Along
Discover the joy of painting with a Bob Ross Paint-Along Workshop! Create serene landscapes, happy little trees, and fluffy clouds while following Bob’s timeless techniques. Perfect for all skill levels—because there are no mistakes, just happy accidents!

Join Ms. Coco Pacheco, our Children’s Librarian, at the Library for our special infant massage program! Studies have shown that infant massages help support the health and well-being of babies and parents, as well as stimulate all the senses of both the baby and parents to promote bonding.
This 5 week program will help parents learn massaging techniques they can incorporate into their daily routines. Parent’s will learn and build on different strokes and pressure methods for their baby, gain insights into their baby’s body language, and will provide parents an opportunity to discuss relevant parent topics, ask questions, share experiences and get support from others.
Registration will open 2 weeks prior to start of the program
Once slots are filled, registration will be closed. Please fill out the waitlist if you would like to be alerted of an opening.

Calling all chess enthusiasts! Every other Saturday, the Downey City Library will host the Adult Chess Club, led by local chess enthusiast Salman Mogaddedi! Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, come sharpen your skills, learn new strategies, and enjoy friendly competition. This is the perfect chance to challenge yourself, meet fellow chess lovers, and have fun!

Our Rainbow World
A child’s world is full of colors! Join us for this class which teaches fun activities and games to help children explore the colors in the world around them. Learn ASL color signs and how colors help children begin to understand the intellectual skill called “classification”.

Calling all gamers ages 10-17! Join us for an action-packed Super Smash Bros Winter Tournament. Test your skills in this bracket-style competition and aim for victory! Spaces are limited, so arrive early to secure your spot in the battle. Spectators are welcome to cheer on their favorite players, and snacks will be provided. Super Smash Bros Winter Tournament (18+)
Ready to smash? Join us for our first-ever Adult Super Smash Bros Winter Tournament, open to gamers ages 18 and up. Compete in a thrilling bracket-style competition for a chance to win prizes and glory! Spaces are limited, so be sure to sign up early. Spectators are encouraged to bring the hype and cheer for their favorite players. Snacks will be provided, and prizes will be awarded to the top three champions. Prove you’ve got what it takes to be the ultimate Smash Bros champion!

Coding & Robotics Club
Join us at the library every month for the Coding and Robotics Club! In each session, you'll learn some basic programming using a block-based coding language, and then try out what you've learned with Microbits—small computer boards that can do all sorts of cool tasks. Each session will build on the last one, and by the end of the program, we'll be programming the Microbits to work like little robots.

Read Along, Draw Along
Join us for a cozy and creative afternoon at our Read Along, Draw Along event! Bestselling author and illustrator Renee Kurilla will delight children with a reading of her beautifully illustrated book, It’s Winter! Kids will follow along with the charming story that celebrates the magic of the winter season.
After the reading, Renee will guide participants through an interactive drawing lesson inspired by the book. Children will learn how to bring one of the book’s whimsical illustrations to life on paper, exploring their creativity and artistic skills.
This event is perfect for children ages 5-12 who love stories and drawing. Supplies will be provided, so all you need to bring is your imagination!

Expanding beyond Baby Signs Program: It’s potty time play series
Join the fun with our children’s services team and On the Grow Educator, for this three-week series to provide a fun way to introduce the potty training concept. Families will learn potty time signs, sing songs, hear stories about using the potty, do yoga poses that help with digestion, and more.

Coding & Robotics Club
Join us at the library every month for the Coding and Robotics Club! In each session, you'll learn some basic programming using a block-based coding language, and then try out what you've learned with Microbits—small computer boards that can do all sorts of cool tasks. Each session will build on the last one, and by the end of the program, we'll be programming the Microbits to work like little robots.

Sign, Say & Play
Your little one has a lot to say! Help them learn to communicate through sign language. Together learn signs and songs through activities and play. Caregivers will receive tips about language and cognitive development at each class.
This is a 5 week program, meeting once per week
Duration: Mondays, November 18th-December 16th
This program is meant for children ages 0-3 yrs

Bookbinding Workshop
Come to the Workshop and make your own book from scratch! This hands-on workshop will walk you through the process of making and customizing a star book.
All materials will be provided. This class is intended for beginners with no previous experience.
This session is intended for ages 18+
Pre-registration is required to attend this program. Registration will open on Monday, December 2nd, at 10:00 AM.

CSULB STEM Tinkering Club (6th-8th Grade)
Join us Saturday mornings this Fall in the Workshop for more sessions of the STEM Tinkering Club, hosted by educators from CSULB. Each session, we’ll explore science and engineering ideas through making: a fun hands-on process of designing, building, testing, rebuilding, and re-testing to create something new!
Students in grades 3rd-5th meet the first Saturday of the month, while students in 6th-8th meet on the second Saturday of the month.
This session is for students who will be in grades 6th-8th.

Expanding beyond Baby Signs Program: It’s potty time play series
Join the fun with our children’s services team and On the Grow Educator, for this three-week series to provide a fun way to introduce the potty training concept. Families will learn potty time signs, sing songs, hear stories about using the potty, do yoga poses that help with digestion, and more.
