Plein Air Painting
Join the Workshop as we head outside the Library and venture to the backyard of the Columbia Memorial Space Center to paint en plein air. We have a limited amount of materials to offer (easels, paint, charcoal) so we encourage you to bring some of your own materials too.
This will not be a formal how-to class, but more of a meet-up for our community members who enjoy art and nature, to get together and learn from each other. This is a great opportunity to continue learning and grow your artistic skills and interests!
This program is intended for ages 18+. Registration is required to attend this program. The registration form will become available on Monday, July 14th on the Workshop’s page.

Summer CSULB STEM Tinkering Club (3rd-5th Grade)
Join us Wednesday mornings in the Workshop this July for Summer sessions of the STEM Tinkering Club, hosted by educators from CSULB. Sewing Club
Come to the Workshop’s monthly Sewing Club! During Sewing Club, you can utilize the Workshop’s equipment and materials to work on an independent sewing project. Don’t have a project in mind? No worries! A select number of beginner sewing projects will be available to you during the session.
Sewing Club participants will be provided assistance and guidance, including instruction on sewing machine use, by our guest instructor, Sharon White. Workshop staff will also be available to provide assistance when possible, and we encourage club members to help each other too! We all have different backgrounds and experiences, so we’ll be learning from each other.
The Workshop will have a limited number of sewing machines available during the session that will be offered to participants on a first come, first served basis. In the event that all sewing machines are occupied, you may still participate in any aspects of the sewing process that don’t require a machine. If you have your own sewing machine, we highly encourage you to bring it with you to the session!
All types of sewing projects are welcome.
Sewing Club sessions are drop-in, meaning you do not have to pre-register in order to attend the session. Space is limited! We ask that you arrive promptly at the beginning of the session in order to secure your spot.
Available materials include: sewing machines, assorted fabric, sewing needles and thread, pins, quilt batting, embroidery materials, irons and ironing boards, and much more!

Please note that not all materials and equipment in the Workshop will be accessible during Open Hours sessions.
This is a drop-in program, meaning registration is not required and space is offered on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited!

New dates and time in the New Year for Chess Club for Kids! Downey Chess Club instructors will be teaching chess in the Cormack Room, Mondays 6:15-7:30pm once a month. Think you’ve got what it takes to outwit, outplay, and outmaneuver your fellow chess enthusiasts? Join us for our Adult Chess Tournament, open to players ages 18 and up of all skill levels!

Teum (틈): Book Club
Join us for 틈 (Teum), our Korean-culture related book club! As part of the diverse cultural programs, we will be highlighting books by Korean-American authors or written by Korean authors and translated into English.
The Korean word 틈 can mean a "brief period" or "moment," capturing the idea of a short span of time. 틈 can also refer to an "opportunity" or "chance," suggesting a window or opening in circumstances that allows for action or change.
The book we are going to read is The Floating World by Axie Oh, a lighthearted romantic fantasy reimagining of a Korean folklore.

The Workshop is hosting Open Hours every Friday this Summer! Each Friday, from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM, the Workshop will be open for you to get creative, explore different artistic mediums, or even pick up a new skill! Participants will be able to utilize select equipment and materials for their independent projects, including drawing, painting, printmaking, fiber arts, and more.
Open Hours are self-led, meaning participants work independently, at their own pace. Workshop staff will be available to help get set up, distribute materials and offer general advice, but they will not be able to provide large group or individual long form, step-by-step instruction.
Please note that not all materials and equipment in the Workshop will be accessible during Open Hours sessions.
This is a drop-in program, meaning registration is not required and space is offered on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited!

Vision Day
Do you need glasses? Has it been more than a year since you had an eye exam? Have you lost or broken your glasses and need a new pair?
Vision To Learn, a nonprofit provider of vision services, is coming to The Downey City Library to provide free vision screenings, eye exams, and glasses to the youth in need. (4 years old – 18 years old)
If you have a current glasses prescription (less than a year old) please bring it with you to this event.
Appointments are not required but are encouraged.
